The Journey

Changing our lives is one of the hardest things possible. We work so hard to gain some sense of stability, security, and safety that it can be unthinkable to leave it all behind and risk some unknown pathway that may or may not succeed. It’s hard enough when only ourselves are concerned, but becomes even more complicated when there are other people involved when we have family members and/or children to consider.

Returning from holidays

And yet, change is necessary for growth and there are these moments in life when we know we’ve outgrown our surroundings. It could be our job, our relationships, our lifestyle, or even where we live. And then there’s something inside that tells us it’s time to move on because something has ended and something new is needed.

This isn’t about a wish to have an adventure or feeling boredom, though both can appear as symptoms of something bigger and deeper that’s growing inside. This is about our own truth, however wild and unreasonable it might seem. It’s about us being true to ourselves and listening to the voice that’s coming from the inside – because it’s our guide to progress, self-development, and growth.

The Journey/ by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice —
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
“Mend my life!”
each voice cried.
But you didn’t stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voice behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do –
determined to save
the only life that you could save.
